Worthing Society Blue Plaque Trail and Associated Heritage Leaflets

Group Name

Worthing Society

Description

The Worthing Society fully recognises the value of the towns social
history to generate interest in the preservation of our heritage.  We have
recently applied for a grant from the Sussex Community Foundation to
produce a series of “Heritage Leaflets” designed to complement the
considerable number of Blue Plaques which the Society has dedicated to the
town. These plaques are an important record of the towns history. We aim
to continue this process, where funding allows,  to develop a “Blue Plaque
Trail” through the town, which can be easily followed via the leaflet. We
hope this project will stimulate interest and research.

If our grant application is successful, these leaflets will give an
attractive description of the subject and a map to locate the plaque
showing the associated listed building or location. They will be
available on-line via our website, at Worthing Museum and the Tourist
Office. The Blue Plaques cover a range of subjects, but are of
considerable interest. Here are some examples:

            Jane Austen
            Oscar Wilde
            Edward V11
            St Pauls Church/Bi-centennary
            Harold Pinter

The plaques are an important record of the towns history covering
architecture, the literary world and historical figures. In our view they
make history more “tangible” and stimulate wider interest in the
importance of preserving our historic environment.
