Marple Civic Society
In January 2009, British Waterways presented their proposals to develop Marple Wharf with dense housing. The proposal included removing boating facilities and giving the New Horizons Trip Boat for people with disabilities 12 months to quite their mooring after operating from the site for 31 years. This was strongly opposed by Marple Civic Society and the local community. The Canal & River Trust still insist that a housing-led development is the best solution for the site but also say they have yet to make a final decision in this respect.
Canal and River Trust (CRT), previously British Waterways, is a charitable trust set up to protect our historic canal heritage. We are hoping that CRT will join in partnership with the Marple Community to develop the wharf in recognition of its huge tourism, leisure and community potential and respecting its wonderful history and heritage. Developed in this way, Marple Wharf could become a flagship site for CRT attracting many visitors and volunteers.
